Betulaceae

Betulaceae includes six genera of deciduous nut-bearing trees and shrubs with a total of 167 species. Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) is a very popular dry fruit in the world being consumed in different form and presentations. There are recent reports about the antioxidant and antiradical activities in extracts of Turkish hazelnut kernel, hazelnut green leafy cover, and other hazelnut byproducts such as hazelnut tree leaf. Recent recognition of nuts as “heart-healthy” foods by the food and drug administration (FDA) has provided a major boost to the image of nuts, including hazelnut.
