Protoescigenin 21-tiglate (compound 10), a type of Bayberry Triterpenoid Saponin (BAT), can be isolated from the acidic hydrolyzed products (AHP) of a crude extract derived from bayberry seeds. BATs are generally known for their robust anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-Alzheimer’s activities. However, the anti-tumor activity of Protoescigenin 21-tiglate is relatively weak, with inhibitory concentrations (IC50) exceeding 80 μM for MCF-7 and at 80 μM for HeLa cells.
