Mal-β-CD, a cellular cholesterol modifier, forms a soluble inclusion complex with cholesterol.
In vitro
Mal-β-CD effectively extracts cholesterol from cells by forming inclusion complexes. This reduction in cellular cholesterol triggered by Mal-β-CD is restored through the introduction of a cholesterol/Mal-β-CD inclusion complex, which replenishes the cholesterol levels without inducing cytotoxicity.
