It serves as a product of both the mevalonate pathway and the MEP pathway in the biosynthesis of isoprenoid precursors. Isopentenyl pyrophosphate isomerase, an enzyme found in virtually all life forms, catalyzes the isomerization between Dimethylallyl Pyrophosphate triammonium salt and IPP[1].
