Ninhydrin is used in the amino acid analysis of proteins. Except for proline, Most amino acids can be hydrolyzed and react with ninhydrin. Ninhydrin reacts with primary and secondary amines producing a blue or purple reaction product: diketohydrindylidene-diketohydrindamine.
