In vivo
Coenzyme Q10 plays a critical role in the electron transport chain and participates in cellular aerobic respiration, generating energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It effectively protects retinal cells from damage under conditions of oxidative stress or hypoglycemia. Moreover, in vitro, Coenzyme Q10 safeguards cells against cytotoxicity induced by glutamate in its various obstructive forms.
