It is converted from Riboflavin and subsequently transformed into N1-(5-Phospho-alpha-D-ribosyl)-5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole by the enzyme nicotinate-nucleotide--dimethylbenzimidazole phosphoribosyltransferase (EC 2.4.2.21).
