Nigericin, an antibiotic derived from Streptomyces hygroscopicus, acts as a K+/H+ ionophore, promoting K+/H+ exchange across mitochondrial membranes. It can activate NLRP3 and cause the release of IL-1β in a NALP3-dependent manner. Nigericin induces eryptosis, partly due to oxidative stress and ROS formation, and also causes apoptosis.
