S3QEL-2 is a potent and selective inhibitor of superoxide anion production by mitochondrial complex III, specifically targeting the IIIQo site (IC50=1.7 μM). S3QEL-2 can prevent the JNK signaling pathway-mediated stress response in pancreatic islets induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and significantly reduce apoptosis caused by oxidative stress, thereby increasing the yield of functional β-cells from intact islets.
