Description
5-hydroxytryptophan (NSC-92523) is the immediate precursor in the biosynthesis of SEROTONIN from tryptophan. It is used as an antiepileptic and antidepressant.
In vitro
5-Hydroxytryptophan exhibits toxicity in mice with an LD50 of 1800 mg/kg. In rats, it demonstrates effects at a dosage of 300 mg/kg when administered intragastrically (i.g.).
In vivo
5-Hydroxytryptophan is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of serotonin from the essential amino acid L-tryptophan, which can easily cross the blood-brain barrier and effectively increase the synthesis of serotonin within the central nervous system. It has been shown to improve conditions such as depression, chronic headaches, and insomnia.
