Description
Droxidopa (L-DOPS) is an orally available prodrug of norepinephrine that is used in the treatment of symptomatic orthostatic hypotension due to neurogenic causes of autonomic failure.
In vivo
Droxidopa is administered orally and is absorbed and converted to norepinephrine by the enzyme dopa decarboxylase, which, together with endogenous norepinephrine, increases neurotransmitter levels.Droxidopa also crosses the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and is converted to norepinephrine and epinephrine in the brain.
