Styracaceae

The Styracaceae are a small family of flowering plants in the order Ericales, containing 12 genera and about 160 species of trees and shrubs. Benzoinum is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat stroke and other cardio-cerebrovascular diseases for thousands of years. Benzoinum comes from the dry resin of Styrax tonkinensis (Pierre) Craib ex Hart and it contains triterpenoids, aromatic compounds, coniferyl and morinol derivatives, among other components. It's reported that benzoinum could prevent cerebral ischaemia and hypoxia and also be used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptosis agent.
