Signaling and Transcriptional activating proteins (STAT) are a unique family of proteins that bind to DNA. Contains SH2 and SH3 domains that bind to specific peptides containing phosphorylated tyrosine. When STAT is phosphorylated, it polymerizes into an activated transcription activator in the form of homologous or heterodimer, which enters the nucleus and binds to specific sites of the target gene promoter sequence to promote its transcription.
