Asteraceae

Asteraceae is an exceedingly large and widespread family of flowering plants with more than 23,600 currently accepted species, spread across 1,620 genera and 13 subfamilies. Many of them are spices used in traditional medicine to cure microbial infections. Chamomile is an herb that comes from the daisy-like flowers of the Asteraceae plant family. It has been consumed for centuries as a natural remedy for several health conditions as well as one of the most popular single-ingredient herbal teas. Chamomile has moderate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and significant antiplatelet activity in vitro. Animal model studies indicate potent antiinflammatory action, some antimutagenic and cholesterol-lowering activities, as well as antispasmotic and anxiolytic effects.
