Zingiberaceae

Zingiberaceae is a family of flowering plants comprising more than 1300 species divided into about 52 genera of aromatic perennial herbs with creeping horizontal or tuberous rhizomes. Members of the family Zingiberaceae including turmeric, ginger, Javanese ginger, and galangal have been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Preclinical studies of Zingiberaceae extracts have shown analgesic properties. Plants belonging to the Zingiberaceae family are rich in polyphenols. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been proposed as a neuroprotector.
